Taking the Train Across Canada

The hubby and I recently marked our 50th wedding anniversary and celebrated with a trip on the VIA Rail train that goes from Toronto to Vancouver – a trip of five nights and four days. Would we do it again? I would in a heartbeat, my husband maybe not.

The trip was wonderful but for someone like my husband, who would rather tend his garden than watch the landscape go by, it was a bit long. He can only take so many miles of looking at trees or prairies.

Mind you, he did enjoy the amazing meals and being able to meet people from all over the world. I liked being rocked to sleep by the train, although walking between moving cars was sometimes a bit of a challenge.

It was a trip to remember and a forced reminder to slow down. With no access to wifi and limited cell service much of the time, we appreciated the games, books, and activities that were provided whenever we wanted a change from watching the beautiful scenery. As Canadians we may take our lakes and mountains a bit for granted until we see the reactions of visitors to our country. We have much to be thankful for.

The trip ended with a day in Vancouver and then a week on Vancouver Island, but the sites there are a topic for another day.

Until then, enjoy this life we have been gifted with.
